New Subaru Outback in Chicago, IL
The Subaru Outback Delivers Trademark Capability and Style
The Subaru Outback is one of the most distinctive and recognizable SUVs on the road. The Outback is a midsize SUV with power, style, safety, and many technology features. One of the Outback's best features is its exceptional off-road performance capabilities that give it the superior handling ability of a truck while providing occupants with all the classic creature comforts of an SUV.
What's New for 2022?
The 2022 Subaru Outback gets some updates to note if you are shopping for a new car. The biggest update for the popular midsize SUV is the addition of a new trim level to the lineup called the Wilderness Edition. The Wilderness has an inch more ground clearance than other trim levels in the Outback family. It has a distinctive exterior with black and copper accents, and it has an upgraded interior with premium features including waterproof seats.
Trim Levels
There are eight trim levels to choose from in the 2022 Subaru Outback family:
- Base
- Premium
- Limited
- Touring
- Onyx Edition XT
- Wilderness
- Limited XT
- Touring XT

The base trim level comes with alloy wheels and hill descent control. It has LED headlights and about 8.7 inches of ground clearance. You'll get two infotainment screens on this trim level, which are replaced by one larger infotainment system on the higher-end trim levels. All trims have Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®. Automatic climate control with one zone is standard on the entry-level trim of the Subaru Outback, while the other trim levels get two-zone climate control. More components are added to the Premium trim level to facilitate your off-road explorations.
The Premium has LED fog lights on the front end. It has a windshield wiper de-icer mechanism to clear snow and ice from the windshield in winter. The side mirrors are heated for safety, and they can fold away and adjust automatically for convenience. This trim gets the larger single-screen infotainment system and a leather steering wheel to make driving even more comfortable and luxurious. A sunroof and a hands-free liftgate are available with a package, and you can also get an integrated navigation system.
The Limited has larger wheels and driver's seat memory settings. The seating material steps up a notch to leather upholstery, and the sound system is upgraded to a Harman Kardon® for a rich, concert-level sound quality across the cabin. The heated seats extend to the back row as well. You can also add on a sunroof and a heated steering wheel to the Limited trim.
Ventilated front seats come with the Touring trim, and its interior features upgraded leather seats with contrast stitching for exquisite detail. The Wilderness Edition gets a different roof rack for superior cargo capacity, and it also has all-terrain tires. A stronger engine powers the XT models.

Performance
The 2022 Subaru Outback gets up to an EPA-estimated 29 MPG combined, which makes it one of the leading vehicles in its class when it comes to fuel efficiency and economy. While the Subaru Outback is a fuel-conscious vehicle, it has no shortage of power with two engines based on trim. The non-XT models are driven by a four-cylinder engine with a 2.5-liter displacement. This engine has a power output of 182 horsepower, and it gets up to 176 pound-feet of torque. An automatic transmission is standard.
The Onyx Edition trim and above is powered by a stronger turbo engine with a 2.4-liter displacement. This engine has an increased power rating of 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. All trims have Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
Safety
Safety on the Outback is impressive at all trim levels. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and forward collision mitigation are standard. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are added on the top trims.
